sonder and empathy
Sometimes, I like to people watch. I'll sit down at a cafe and just observe people going about their lives. This has always been a fun way for me to stay grounded and in-the-moment. I later realized that these were moments of sonder, before I knew what the word actually meant.
The definition of “sonder” (although not legit) is the realization that each random passerby is living a life as vivid and complex as your own — populated with their own ambitions, friends, routines, worries and inherited craziness. This concept is so interesting to me, as it seems like common sense, but oftentimes, people get so absorbed in their own lives to appreciate this.
Every random person you walk by on the street has their own stories, charm, and something unique about them. To them, you are that random passerby on the street.
Your life might only have enough room for a few people, so it may feel overwhelming to think about complete strangers, but by doing so, I truly believe you become a more empathetic person.
Humans are so complex, and it's kind of insane that there are over 8 billion of us on this Earth. It's impossible to understand the thoughts of all, but it's enough to empathize with the thoughts of some.
